Are Kikuyus holding Kenya back?
Kikuyus naturally inherited the white settler or colonial infrastructure. They were physically closest to the center of power. They ended up dominating public sector employment, resource allocation and logically other areas of the economy. Besides the Indians, and White interests, Kikuyus are the largest economic player in the country. All periphery areas of Kenya have been neglected. Western Kenya, Northern Frontier and much of the Coast. Only Central Kenya gained and revisionism now attributes it to “superior” kikuyu culture.
But this has resulted in short-termism, opportunism and cartel-style management of business. Traits that are associated with modern kikuyu culture. That’s why Kenyans see each other and foreigners perceive Kenyans as conmen and women. They still hold more public sector jobs than their portion of the population. Do you think we need a different kind of culture influencing the Kenyan psyche?
