Can a Man be a Feminist?

  • 4

I have just had an interesting discussion with progressive men who identify themselves as LGBT. They strongly argue that men – even gays – cannot be feminists because of the embodiment of a male body. By this, they mean by embodying such a body one is accorded male privileges whether he wants them or not. Do you agree with them?

Anybody can be a feminist. Beliefs and ideologies are not limited to gender bias.

The current version of feminism is so biased and selfish. People don’t quite understand it and use it only when it benefits them.

Feminism is mainly attributed to the female sex because of the history of oppression and patriarchy that mostly affected women. When it started it was a struggle against stereotypes that were supported by men hence their un-involvement. Later on, more men joined the fight for equity of the sexes and this is what brought the confusion which really shouldn’t be there.

Anyone can be a Feminist. Feminism is an ideology that is beyond sex and gender. It is more about equity. People who attempt to own the idea are the very ones who destroy it.
