The Community Project by Sunguti Emmanuel
There are two strategies in the world for combating Flu like viruses:
- Herd immunity.
Most countries are using Lockdown and mass testing because herd immunity is dangerous.
I was of the idea of using both.
Because the flu season (homa) is coming in Kenya, many people may flood the hospital thinking it’s corona while it may be just the common cold. Straining our healthcare.
Coronavirus in East Africa
So this is my strategic plan:
Hospitals have data on vulnerable people in society, people diagnosed with this and that or subscribers for a particular drug.
Government can get that data and focus testing:
- those vulnerable and maybe the old in affected in high risk areas and isolate them ( barring interaction with younger people)
- expand the testing to other vulnerable members of society around Kenya. (Isolate) also barring interaction.
- let young people build herd immunity as they rebuild the economy.
They however should not interact with older people. For a couple of months.
This might mean that younger people might have to take jobs of the older people depending on their leadership skills. Therefore we can have a lot of young people secure employment.
From management to leadership, Technically younger people running the country.

Frequently Asked Questions:
If found negative older people can be transferred to rural areas for minimal interaction. ( Especially in areas with high population density such as pipeline Nairobi) we have NYS buses and maybe other companies can volunteer.
Food that was meant to be donated to families can then be distributed to them as well as young people look for their own, they can further boost their parents.
Good question… I would propose this:
Using families/ neighborhoods or community centers. If we do not have a place we create monitored homes (Temperature sensors and sanitized etc ) before things go back to the same.
For those with some bit of money, they can rent for their parents ka vacation. We up our local Safaris. We revamp our economy na watu waneza relax.
Children ( boarding) will have to go back to boarding waendelee na masomo. The schools in America zilifungwa juu most of them ni day.
Sisi watoto hufungiwa huko they don’t interact with the outside world. Although for emotional support, well have to introduce a better and less strenuous education system as well as better food. Only boarding.
We’ll have to brainstorm on that one. It could be by reducing fees, expanding capacity and generally improving sanitation system for the current boarding.
Their teachers will have to be locked in with them.
We will need to have to re-create the environment so that it’s emotionally encouraging for both teachers and students. Schools as you can see will have to be bigger. With relaxing spaces. We’ll need social psychologists to help us here.
However, because time in school will be increased( significantly) younger people will need to really work on production so that prices go down for food.
Music, carpentry, agriculture pottery, metal work etc.
Other options are having older ( isolated, and tested ) managers go to school to encourage the kids or teach them their routines.
We will be building immunity, like how we have for the common cold by community herd immunity.
As the world will keep stocking on ventilators, we, will focus on community. It is very risky but it can be done.
