This makes for a nice soundbite, but the claims are false;
*Did colonialists murder, enslave and rape millions of Africans? Yes they did. This is deplorable and a sad fact of history. But they also did this countless times in their own wars and conflicts, killing, maiming and enslaving millions. Blacks were not even in the picture. Blacks did the same, and continue to do the same on fellow blacks today. The problem of human violence is more pervasive and complex than this statement cares to admit.
*Did missionaries ‘Brutally’ convert Africans to Christianity. Not quite. No doubt, there were some whose practices may have been excessive, but the vast majority were honest, Godly men who labored and paid the ultimate price to share Christ’s love to our people. Not to mention beginning schools, hospitals and other institutions that greatly improved their quality of life.
*Did the missionaries teach God was White? If they did that was erroneous. All humans, white, black, red, yellow and brown are created in God’s image. Jesus was not white. The popular images of an effeminate, blue eyed blonde hardly represent what Christ must have looked like, not that his physical looks mattered much. The idea of racial supremacy is a social construct that has no basis in scripture.The Bible emphasizes that here is no man, woman, slave or freed in Christ. We are one, all bearing the image of the immortal God.
*Does the Bible teach the need for forgiveness? Absolutely, not just as a prerequisite to meeting God, but for the healing of our societies. With all the violence and bloodletting in human history, only forgiveness can heal and bring restoration.
***The idea that Christianity is an invention of the West is a lie. Abraham, the father of our faith was a man formed in the African crucible.
*Its Africa and African fathers that formulated much of what is Orthodox Christian Doctrine. Men such as St. Augustin, Tertullian and the Carpedocian fathers proposed and developed many foundational ideas of Christianity. .
*Africa was a Centre of Christianity before Europe was. Axum in Ethiopia was established as a Christian Centre atleast half a century before Rome!
So, it’s neither the colonialists nor the 18th/19th century missionaries who brought Christianity to Africa.
