During the times that I travel to other countries I notice many things; one of the small things I notice is that, in most of these countries, there are no security guards with metal detectors at the entrance of public spaces.
Many of these are ‘developed’/’1st-world countries’ yet they do not have this function that seems to be in every store, mall and public building in Kenya’s capital. Do you think our security system works? I tend to believe it doesn’t and can be made better.
We need to create a nationwide intuitive security infrastructure, one which would [say] pick out the criminal carrying an explosive device way before he assembles it as opposed to having him eventually checked at the door by a guard with zero combat training. The latter being a thing that close to never happens.
Criminologists, IT experts, and security specialists, where at thou? Talk to me.
What are your thoughts?

not in the least bit. it is accomodatable at best but not satisfactory. there is so much to be done.integrity is a culture that needs to be fostered in the security sector.
I dnt think it’s satisfactory only for the political class and the rich, people get getting robbed and killed.

Security guards really have to be taught a little bit of psychology so as to read cues. This would help in identifying someone who’s a threat without even having to frisk them. Body posture and behavior are major tell tale signs.

We like PR stunts everywhere. Some of these detectors don’t even work. Kenya has very many loopholes in terms of security. Yes security starts with you, but what is the work of the State if everyone decided to make security their work? There is a reason why we had a Westphalian Treaty when it came to the formation of a State. In return, the state was to assure that we the citizens are safe. ‘Security Starts with you’ is just a phrase meant to make the government evade accountability.

Security starts with you… Nyumba Kumi will protect you much more better than the police.

Kenya’s Special forces is voted 3rd best in Africa while Kenya is 6th in terms of Military strength and fire power. The only defect in security comes with our intelligence. I firmly believe with improved intelligence Kenya will be the most secure country in Africa. We have invested more than 5b in matters security and we still have a chance to put more effort and focus on intelligence. So it’s not satisfactory yet but it’s in a position to make serious amends and improvements.

In my opinion Kenya has a lot of security campaniles who have really ventured into the business, but the big question remains are this security guards given adequate training on how they can combat a terrorist attack or even much better not be in more panic than even the citizens they are taking care of. In Kenya we have malls and big offices the only thing you will find at the entrance are unarmed security guards who are very easy to by pass if you are carrying a dangerous object. Public offices in Kenya are filled with non functional metal and gun detectors you wont even be surprised to learn that quite a good number of the security guards do not know how to use this machines apart from frisking you!

The president said security is your own responsibility. That is true. Security in kenya depends on how mush money you have to buy an electric fence, private security guards, security dogs, surveillance systems… Even police themselves are not safe in Kenya. We just live by faith.

Funny but sadly true.

I find that it’s not effective or economical to have metal detectors in most places because nine out of 10 times the guards are ignorant on the functionality of the equipment and the other one time the equipment isn’t in tip top condition. Other countries manage to do without all those shenanigans yet are still safer than we are. Even countries that have experienced multiple terrorist attacks still find better ways to maintain security than throwing metal detectors at every door. As a country we are too paranoid and our paranoia isn’t substantiated.
My country has tried to ise metal detectors in most public places, though this hasn’t been that efficient
