The latest news has him either feeding congregants with Rats and Snakes or walking in the air… The once shy and poor Malawi-born, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of SB Investments now has a net worth of $150 Million Dollars. Should African governments start taxing churches and demand their accountability to a being other than God?
It is 2020 and the 37-year-old self-proclaimed “prophet” and fraud accused pastor, once a shy, timid boy who followed his mother everywhere, is one of the richest pastors in Africa, fanatic a record high of 100,000 physical congregants.
He has a chain of churches across the continent, has been banned from Botswana over “miracle money”, claims to have cured people of HIV, walking on air in a video shared widely on social media and owns four private jets.
Prophet Shepherd Bushiri Biography:
According to Wikipedia, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri biography begins with him as one of the as powerful prophets in Africa and the richest pastors in the world.
Also known by his alias, Major One, he is a Christian preacher, motivational speaker, author and businessman from Malawi. He founded and leads a Christian non-denominational evangelical church known as the Enlightened Christian Gathering alongside Prophet Shepherd Bushiri Ministries and a string of businesses.
Born in Lilongwe, Malawi on the 20th February 1983 as Shepherd Huxley Bushiri, which is his real name, he was raised with 6 siblings in the northern Malawian city of Mzuzu. His parents, Huxley and Christina Bushiri gave the preacher the name Shepherd because his mother experienced a tough time during his birth.
Bushiri is now 37 years old and Married to Mary Bushiri who is two years older than him. She is commonly known as Prophetess Mary Bushiri and formerly worked as an accountant in an international non-governmental organization.
The once timid boy from a very poor family in Mzuzu, Malawi, has now risen to fame after becoming a self-proclaimed prophet and doing a series of controversial “miraculous healings” in his churches across the continent.
He is also one of the very few people who can claim to be successful world-class prophets and entrepreneur at the same time.
However, since he keeps his sources of wealth away from the public eye, people speculate fraud. Shepherd Bushiri is now known as one of the wealthiest pastors in the world and one of the most affluent and controversial people in Africa.
Enlightened Christian Gathering (Ironic Name)
Bushiri’s journey to wealth, fame, and success as a pastor and entrepreneur began in 2012. He started off the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG), with just 35 congregants and by 2015 the number of congregants has risen to 15000 registered members.
Malawians say they saw through the “miracles” prophet of profit and describe him as a con man and a fake who loves money and fame.
This didn’t stop him. He packed his bags and left his poor home country Malawi, and moved to South Africa in search of greener pastures has proved to be everything but a man of God.
In South Africa, he created more branches and lead the church from 200 members to an estimated current number of 100000 members registered in Pretoria alone. In the whole country, they have over 700000 registered members, almost a million people.
Largest Christian Congregation in Africa
The Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) is now one of the fastest-growing churches in Africa and the world and is headquartered in Pretoria, South Africa and it also operates in Malawi, Ghana, South Sudan, and some other African countries.
Prophet Shepherd Bushiri set a continental record one Sunday with as at least 100,000 recorded congregants flocking his church service in Pretoria, South Africa. The 95,000-capacity FNB Stadium in Johannesburg was full of his followers.
ECG church draws arguably the largest crowds compared to any other congregation in Pretoria, South Africa.
Streets adjacent to the church, which is housed in the vast Pretoria Events Centre, are a hive of activity on many days each week as vehicles bearing registration plates from all South African provinces stream into the vast enclosure for evening prayers.
The weekly Sunday church services are Pretoria’s indisputable show-stoppers, drawing crowds of diverse races from all over.
Due to these high numbers, people have been killed and other congregants injured during stampedes at the ECG church while attending the service.
The death of congregants led protests at the ECG, with community members calling for the church to be expelled from the Pretoria Showgrounds immediately and for Bushiri to be deported back to Malawi.
Prophet Uebert Angel – Bushiri’s Spiritual Father
Bushiri is mentored by Prophet Uebert Angel, an equally wealthy African pastor, minister, televangelist, and businessman based in the United Kingdom. Uebert Angel, who is also Prophet Bushiri’s Spiritual Father, is a multimillionaire with a net worth estimated at $60 million which was sourced from his ministry and real estate.
Ironically enough, his choice of a spiritual father has also had a fair share of controversy in his ministry. Prophet Angel has been on the run from criminal charges including rape and theft by false pretense in Zimbabwe.
Uebert now runs a church called the Spirit Embassy located in Manchester, England. Just like his Spiritual son, Uebert also has a Spiritual father who was American Preacher Kenneth Hagin. After the death of Hagin in 2003, he picked up Pastor Chris Oyakilome as his new spiritual father and mentor.
Prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s Net Worth
Prophet Bushiri is known to be one of the wealthiest celebrity gospel preachers in the world and one of the most affluent people in Africa. How much is his net worth?
Friends and family close to him, don’t understand how he became so rich and managed to buy a $1.25 million private jet with hard cash along with a string of luxury cars, private homes a hotel, and a spa.
Being mentored by a multimillionaire businessman and leader of Good News Church in the UK, Prophet Uebert Angel, Shepherd lives a lavish lifestyle. His cars are worth a fortune. His fleet includes a Rolls Royce Black Badge that has an estimated worth of R10 million and a Bentley Bentayga Limited Edition that is worth about R6 million.
Beyond the pulpit, Shepherd owns SB Investments (Pty) Ltd, a company that is based in Sandton, South Africa. The international investment firm has interests in mining, oil, real estate, hospitality, and transportation.
He is said to generate wealth from his work as a businessman, author, motivational speaker and evangelist, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri net worth as at 2020 was estimated to be over $150 million USD!
Just how do men and women of God become so rich? Bushiri is a business mogul who owns a network of businesses, chief of which is SB Investments which has projected him as one of the top businessmen in Africa.
There is no readily available record of his net worth but he is known to have interests in several mines and owns four private planes and a number of hotels through his investment company Shepherd Bushiri Investments, headquartered in Johannesburg’s plush suburb of Sandton.
The controversial preacher’s source of wealth was revealed as a result of faking everything from miracles to the purchase of expensive cars and planes that have never been known to have any business except theft by deception.
Prying on Vulnerable Congregants
He insisted on attributing his money to the 14 years of work at Enlightened Christian Gathering but being a pastor from a poor background, this is a little too good to be true. Some think he has become rich by preying on the vulnerable.
Bushiri, caused a social media furor when he asked his followers to donate offerings to his controversial enterprise to sustain it during the nationwide lockdown. He has now set up the self-titled “Major 1 Connect” prophetic channel app and launched an online worship service that will require congregants to fork out a monthly R80 subscription fee.
Reports have revealed a prevalence of unsafe practices like making congregants eat rats, snakes, grass, and drink petrol, all in the name of proving their faith. There were also allegations of sexual abuse in some instances.
He has made a considerable profit margin from so-called ‘faith products’ that are bought by poor people desperate to have their lives change for the better after fake prosperity gospel sermons.
On a regular Sunday, about 40,000 people will gather to hear the Prophet preach, and potentially pick up some of the specially designed merchandise on sale at stalls dotted around the large church complex – anything from “miracle oil”, calendars and wrist bands, to branded towels, T-shirts and caps, all emblazoned with his face.
The vendors tell patrons that all the wares have been prayed over by Mr. Bushiri and so have healing powers.
Bushiri and his wife Mary were both charged with fraud, money laundering, and contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, by the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria.
Since money always talks in Africa, the pair was released on almost $6,000 USD bail each. Bushiri has also been in and out of court for a case of rape that is still pending.
Well, I am so tired of teaching people and helping them see their own delusions. We should just direct everyone who is blinded by religion and prosperity gospel to have actual experience and learn the hard way.
Sad that it may be too late when they finally see the truth. Since the biggest concern of most blind Christians is “How do I tap into God’s blessings?” Or “How do I meet and visit men of God like Prophet Shepherd Bushiri – Major 1?”
