How do you differentiate a charlatan from the real McCoy?
If we’re to call a spade a spade, there are 3 kinds of people in this world: –
(1) Good people,
(2) Outright Bad people, &
(3) Bad people who pretend to be good people
I’m not sure if I’m (1) or (2), but that doesn’t matter now. The last type (3) form 75+% of the population and are the most injurious to humanity, number (2), and easiest to detect, form about 15% (here is where you have the Hitlers and many deemed by history as ‘benevolent psychopaths/dictators’), and category (1) form less than 5% of the world population, yes I know, good things are indeed rare just like diamonds.
So, most people on this world are just performers on a stage called life where they constantly connive their way in self-interest. Altruism is overrated. But how do you distinguish a charlatan from the real McCoy? Today is Sunday, let’s look to the bible for an analogy. As recorded in Matthew 6:3-4, Jesus Christ states, “[…] But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing […] so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you […]” … And there you have it; a charlatan will always be quick to say what he/she is doing for the world yet if indeed they did not do it for the kudos they would let their actions speak for themselves and others talk of their works.
Christ himself did not have forums where he said how many people he healed in fact, he told those he healed to say nothing of it. Today, the charlatan when challenged with this example will be quick to say, “But we do so to gain more support for our work, so that others can chip in,” – again, type (3)s above are masters of inveigling the masses and always have a response to criticism. Type (3)s are usually charismatic politicians, quick-talkers, too-good-to-be-true philanthropists, witty journalists, celebrities, and most people mistaken for type (1).
In contrast, type (1)s, like The Buddha, Mother Teresa or Christ, would operate like salt – felt not seen. One sure way to know someone is not humble is if they keep saying that they are.
