New Mombasa a real city located in Kenya. Mombasa is an Island made up of 3 by 5 Km coral outcrop located on Kenya’s coast on the Indian Ocean, which is connected to the mainland by a causeway. Some parts of the city are located on the island while the rest is on the coast of Kenya.
There are different terms used to describe the East-African Coastal strip that covers Tanzania, Kenya, and Somali. Mombasa, being the biggest and most accessible dock in the area was originally the capital of the East Africa Protectorate until 1907.
The terms New and Old Mombasa are used to describe the prominent ares along this coastal strip. However, there are maritime disputes that seem to place the ownership of Mombasa to Somali or Tanzania. “New” Mombasa is actually the space elevator “tether city” that was built on an island off the coast of the real-world city of Mombasa, Kenya.
Mombasa is famous for being Kenya’s main tourist destination. I couldn’t find the actual meaning of the name Mombasa but I suspect it was inherited from the local tribes or the arab invaders and trades-people. Being a cultural melting pot, Swahili is therein language spoken in Mombasa but people can easily get around with English. Other languages spoken in Mombasa include, Italian, French and Arabic.
