Prominent and selfless Human Rights Activist, Mutemi Wa Kiama, was last night abducted after 7 armed police officers claiming to be from the DCI broke into his home and unlawfully arrested him. They stormed his home at around 7 pm demanding to see him and he managed to capture the whole ordeal on video.
Kenyan Police with their lack of adequate training has for very long depended on colonial ways to administer control. That’s why we’ve had the Nyayo torture chambers, a series of assassinations, and extra-judicial killings.
However, Kenyans no longer live in shackles. We are awake and aware of our rights. The more such unlawful arrests happen, the more we will talk about and the masses will be educated.
You can fool some Kenyans most of the time, but you can not fool 53 Million Kenyans all the time. #FreeMutemi #ReleaseKiama Click To Tweet

Mutemi Wa Kiama is Amplifying Dissent in Kenya:

The abduction that happened at night is very questionable, especially with Kenya’s history of extra-judicial killings and mysterious murder and disappearing of human rights activists.
During the unlawful arrest, Kiama managed to get the names of 2 of abductors. They sandwiched him in one of those infamous Subarus they use and he could see that 3 of them were armed.
Kiama began a Facebook live-stream as he repeatedly asked the officers to show him a warrant for his arrest, asking them to slip it under the door.
The live-stream was eventually cut off raising questions on Kiama’s whereabouts before it emerged that he had been arrested, with the activist accusing the police of breaking into his home.
Human Rights Watch has accused Kenya's police force of carrying out the extrajudicial killings of around two dozen young men and boys in the low-income areas of Nairobi over the past year. #FreeMutemi #ReleaseKiama Click To TweetHis phone was switched off and for a while, no one knew where they had taken him. The timing by @ DCI_Kenya ensures activists are unable to spread out and look for him. The nearest police station to his residence is Karen.
The correct procedure is for a police officer who has collected enough evidence to link an offense to a particular person is to go to the court and ask for a warrant. That almost never happens in Kenya.
Human rights activists Boniface Mwangi, Manjeri Nderu and others worked out of the curfew to launch a search that located him at the Capital Hill Police. They rushed immediately to ensure Mutemi wa Kiama is warm for the night after the illegal arrest.

The Abduction of Mutemi Wa Kiama
The abductees were 4 officers from the Serious Crimes Unit and 3 others from Karen Police Station.
A group of 7 armed men who said they are detectives from Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), broke into Kiama’s house in Dagoretti after he refused to open and demanded a warrant of arrest, which they didn’t produce.
Despite Kiama demanding a reason for his arrest, he did not get any answer. The individuals didn’t produce any documents to prove their identity either.
Kiama streamed the incident live on Facebook and the video ended with one of them forcefully taking his phone. In a post that appeared on his Facebook page, Mr. Kiama said:
“There are people banging on my door. Not sure who they are. I think they’re are cops. Sijafungua bado. They are banding like they want to break the door. Apparently, it’s DCI. They’re are trying to get permission to break in”

The Injustice will be Live Streamed:
For those of us who know Mutemi, he has obviously been targeted to stifle his voice against injustices and silence public dissent on corruption, police brutality, extra-judicial killings, and more rot that keeps cropping up in Kenya.
One of his recent posts which caused a furor in some quarters saw him allude to the move by protesters in Bristol, England to pull down the statue of a 17th Century Slave Trader, posting it alongside the statue of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
Many Kenyans have been beneficiaries of Mutemi Wa Kiama’s voice and it is time for us to support him and demand for his release.

Update on His Mutemi’s Abduction:
Mutemi Wa Kiama will this morning be charged at Milimani law courts for obtaining and posting copyrighted material. He is still at Capital Hill police station.
Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi confirmed that Kiama was taken to Capitol Hill Police Station where he is being held. He has been booked for digital pirating of a book.

Voices from #KOT Kenyans on Twitter & Social Media:
Kenyans on social media have condemned the incident calling on the DCI to come out clean on Kiama’s violent arrest.
Kenyans on Twitter, popularly known as KoT, have begun a hashtag #FreeMutemiKiama #FreeMutemi #ReleaseKiama while condemning police brutality in the country.
Today’s incident is similar to a dramatic arrest of the outspoken admin of popular Facebook group Buyer Beware, Mildred Atieno, in January this year.

Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) @ thekhrc:
The police must follow all the laws of Kenya just like you and me. People’s homes are private places and cannot be open to @ NPSOfficial_KE. The police, therefore, have to obtain valid arrest/search warrant from the Magistrate. #ReleaseKiama #FreeMutemi

Dear Kenyans, Stop calling it an arrest when strangers claiming to be police officers come to your house at dusk, produce no warrant, break the door, beat you up, take your property, kidnap and hold you incommunicado. No law in Kenya recognizes that as an arrest. #ReleaseKiama

Kenyan Police History of Extrajudicial Killings
Human Rights Watch Accuses Kenyan Police of Extrajudicial Killings

NAIROBI – Human Rights Watch has accused Kenya’s police force of carrying out the extrajudicial killings of around two dozen young men and boys in the low-income areas of Nairobi over the past year.
In a report published earlier in July, the rights group said it documented the cases but that many more have occurred in these areas, known as informal settlements. Police have not responded to VOA requests for comment.

Kenya: Nairobi Police Executing Suspects – Dozens Killed in Low-Income Areas

(Nairobi) – Police in Kenya have killed no fewer than 21 men and boys in Nairobi’s low-income areas, apparently with no justification, claiming they were criminals, Human Rights Watch said today.
The extrajudicial killings point to a broader problem of police using excessive, unlawful force in the name of maintaining law and order in Nairobi’s informal settlements and failing to comply with the law in ensuring all police killings are reported, investigated, and those responsible for unlawful killings are prosecuted.
