We are struggling to sustain healthy relationships, experiencing inflated levels of drug and substance abuse, sexual and gender-based violence, intimate partner violence, suicide rates well over the roof, and harmful work environments.
These realities do not exist in a vacuum. They have roots, often hidden from us by the demands of daily life. The effects of childhood trauma are far-reaching and more real in our lives more than ever before. Much of it is passed down from generation to generation, until, and this might surprise you, the DNA patterns of our family lineage altered.
One day in 2015 as my mum and dad fought for the umpteenth time, I dared call them for a meeting to discuss possible ways forward. Many relatives had attempted for years before but nothing seemed to be working.
As I sat with my father, he uttered words that have stayed with me for 5 years now. Words that opened me up to a new world.
He said, “I don’t come to you with my problems because you’ll think I’m weak.”
It was a vulnerable moment. Probably because he felt cornered and something had to give.
I remember feeling a twitch in my mind. That was it. That one statement was my lead to understanding who he was, who he believed he was, and explain the nucleus of all the chaos his body and mind inhabited that he transferred to us.
In this Zoom webinar, I explain the complexities of trauma, explore post traumatic stress, and how it takes root in our bodies to the extent that we pass it down to our loved ones subconsciously.
I offer healthy simple coping tools for emotional regulation and self awareness that would complement other forms of therapy for anyone in their healing journey.
I say this to healing circles, clients, and friends; be intentional about your healing.
