Disability is a very broad term since it includes mental health which many do not consider a problem. When you look at it, the population of people living with disabilities is larger than perceived.
To start with, appropriate sensitization from as early as preschool stage on the types of disabilities and how to live with people with disabilities should be provided.
Secondly, infrastructures and facilities that are easily accessible to persons with disabilities should be provided. These include, accessible toilets, special spaces in public transport, accessible alternatives in buildings with staircases….etc
Thirdly, besides quality education, equity should be put in place when providing job opportunities to persons living with disabilities. Many of them are denied opportunities to quality education and employment.
Lastly, the society and persons living with disabilities should be educated on their rights and the consequences of violating those rights to avoid cases of all forms of abuse, neglect, and mistreatment.
Well said Tee Nine. In most cases however, the perpetrators are known only that they are influential due to either their social status, or gender ascription and therefore the law favors them.
Thank you for sharing.
I voted yes only because 20 years is a good period for reforms through civic education. But currently, a female leader has higher chances of being tarnished than glorified!
I do forgive when I find myself in such a dilemma. Forgiveness heals you while it haunts the other party.
Girls have been socialized to believe that having a baby outside marriage will limit your chances of getting a good man. The society has also labelled them as irresponsible. So yes, the fear of being stigmatized will cause many girls to commit abortion. Some of them assisted by their mothers under the notion, “what will people say?”
Very very true. Bail or short term sentences should never be an option.
Thank you for sharing Manser.
Most female victims do not actually trust the police with their cases and true to say, most cases end up being unreported and it is until murder occurs that action is taken.
Thank you for sharing Daisy.
Today’s Daily Nation had the story on victims of violence whose families are yet to find justice.
In my precise opinion, the criminal justice system may be doing something, but not enough.
I respect your opinion Stephen
Haha true, on a lighter note, that’s a job opportunity for someone…
