When you look at the content we are fed even on TV, from Nairobi Diaries to 10/10. I would rather sell my scripts to an international company or director than try convince the uninformed people who have the money and decision making ability. We have great scripts locked up in closets never to see the light of Kenya’s sad film industry ? 2 Reply Share Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google plus Share on WhatsApp Sam Muregz Nairobi, Kenya 1 Questions 9 Answers 1 Best Answers 244 Points View Profile Sam Muregz East Africa Replied to answer on July 26, 2018 at 8:01 pm Who us there to consume? We keep complaining about content yet the people who complain never watch TV. The reason those TV shows will never stop showing is coz that mama from ocha or that mboch have no laptop, internet or DVD player. They don’t follow GOT and Papa Shirandula is the only thing they look forward to 2 Reply Share Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google plus Share on WhatsApp Daisy Mwikali Nairobi, Kenya 2 Questions 177 Answers 16 Best Answers 3,988 Points View Profile Daisy Mwikali East Africa Replied to answer on July 26, 2018 at 9:02 pm I agree with you Sam! Most of this well crafted content is targeted to people who have Netflix subscriptions, prefer watching stuff on the big screen cinemas and have access to many alternative. Prime time TV is dead and gone. We may never resurrect it! ??????? 0 Reply Share Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google plus Share on WhatsApp Robert Mũnũku Nairobi, Kenya 27 Questions 53 Answers 8 Best Answers 1,694 Points View Profile Robert Mũnũku East Africa Added an answer on July 27, 2018 at 6:11 pm This answer was edited. A bit vague to say ‘Kenyan Film Scripts’ but still a good question. We can talk of T.V. Series. Short Films, Feature Films, Documentaries, Music Videos, etc. All which typically fall under the parameters of ‘Filmmaking’ and require scripts of sorts. What I can do, however, is comment as an independent (‘indie’/not mainstream) filmmaker. The mainstream scripts (in most of the above categories) are sub-standard. The film industry in Kenya is not mature – we celebrate the celebrity culture not talent. We confuse popularity with talent & skill. Most (not all) famous actors, musicians and filmmakers in Kenya are just glorified socialites – celebrities riding on one instance of fame, feeding their narcissism with constant public acknowledgement, instead of being open to the need to keep learning the craft. Many young people want to be actors and musicians not out of a love for film or music but because they too want to be ‘loved’ like the famous actors and musicians they see on our screens. Do not get me wrong, we DO have good actors, both male and female, but these are a sad few. In my view – and why I CHOOSE to remain indie – the solution to this impasse is a demolition of the ‘celebrity culture’ in filmmaking and a return to honest hardwork, commitment and passion for what we pursue.
