Wajir East MP Rashid Amin physically assaulted Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Gedi, by punching her at Kenya’s Parliament building. Why does violence against women continue?

  • 8

I am appalled and outraged at the assault incident that happened today at the Parliament buildings, in which Hon. Fatuma Gedi the Wajir County Women Representative was physically assaulted by a fellow member of Parliament from Wajir County.

This behavior marks a new and previously unimaginable, low point and it is completely unacceptable. No matter the level of disagreement or misunderstanding, a male leader doesn’t have to go to the length of physically assaulting and harming a fellow leader just because she is female and is viewed as the weaker gender. No woman on this earth is weak, we are the same woman who are mothers, sisters, grandmother’s and wives back at home.

That kind of behavior and harm to women leaders is unacceptable in all events, it is against the basic human act of respect for women and for all and also violates the spirit of leadership and integrity. I am equally appalled and outraged by the continous mockery of women leadership through both physical and verbal abuse.

It is unthinkable for that kind of act to have happened to my fellow women leader. I not only condemn it in the strongest terms possible but also lambast and stand against all forms of assault, bullying and mistreatment of women. In whatever way it is, that kind of behavior is completely out of order and uncalled for.

Through this statement, i hereby declare violence against women a national concern that deserves to be addressed. As a nation we cannot make any progress in a society where women are on a daily basis subjected to mockery, sexual harassment, physical assault and unnecessary torture of unimaginably proportions at the hands of men. We should have a Kenya where every women as treated as of value addition to nation building same as men. We should appreciate the thousands of women who are serving this great nation in various sectors and despite their positions continue being subjected to abuse and ill treatment because of their gender.

Today’s incident against Hon. Fatuma Gedi should be a rallying call for all Kenyan women across board to stand up and say no to all forms of violence against women. Let’s advocate and stand for women rights because our agitation for women rights is becoming a major issue in Kenya.

My best wishes and prayers for my sister Hon. Fatuma Gedi MP Wajir County, i stand with you Hon. Kabambay.

Hon. Amina Gedow Hassan,
MP – Mandera County

I will not be surprised to see Wajir East MP Rashid Amin walk away and retain his seat after physically assaulting Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Gedi in broad daylight. What is wrong with our country? Are we even aware of what is happening around us?

Politicians and powerful people should receive more severe punishment than other citizens. This should be a lesson for them to stop using their positions.

I condemn the actions of the MP and he should be put behind bars immediately. However, it is wrong to associate every crime against women with gender, especially the reverse is not the same.
