I guess the best business to start in a populous urban setting like Nairobi is one that is service oriented and if possible doesn’t cost you anything other than the initial capital. I know shoe shining or public toilet in a strategic place will come up in many heads but far from that, EDUCATION it is. I wish Universities came up with it as we really like to enroll and learn. Kenyan education is over-emphasized. I am personally using an online educational platform that has serious international attention (not the local platform, many have never heard of it) as an easy tool to show Kenyans you don’t need to start from very high to build a steady income. It just needs $110 (KES.11,000) to start though one could still begin with $30 (KES.3,000). You get to access the educational tools and every time you get a client to register for the classes as well, you break even with 100% as commission, that is the deal that attracted me the most. No hustle, no licenses, no taxes, just pure stay at home business. Most young people I share this with prefer to make the money than attend the classes themselves. The educational content is high quality for a tech savvy society and not outdated like our educational system. Let me ask where do you find a brick and mortar college that pays even 75% commission for referring a student? Thanks to technology and the internet, 100% is no brainer.

Vegetables and Fruits do well, you have to be the one supervising the wholesale buying and selling process because brokers can mess you up.
If you are ambitious enough, get a piece of land and plant. Basically anything that deals with food is good when you have consistent customers…

Business is tricky, that why they say it is a risk. For example… If one particular business does well e.g M-Pesa everyone now flocks to start the same business and as a result, reduces the success rate or profits made by existing businesses.

I would be interested to find out whats kicking right now, through what they don’t say is that for whatever it is to shine now, they probably began months or even years back when it didn’t make sense. 🙂
