Which of the African Superpower Contenders — Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt — is the most powerful country in Africa?

  • 8

On the system of government, while South Africa and Nigeria are democratic — Egypt is not.

On energy, Egypt and Nigeria are net exporters while South Africa is a net importer.

On the economy, Egypt and South Africa have a diversified economy in terms of manufacturing and consumer sectors. Nigeria is a petro-state highly dependent on oil and gas exports.

On neighbourhood, Egypt and Nigeria reside in an increasingly tricky geopolitical area. South Africa is safe in Southern Africa.

On rankings; Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt are the largest, the 2nd largest, and the 3rd largest economy in Africa respectively. Furthermore; Egypt, South Africa, and Nigeria are the largest, the 4th largest, and the 5th largest military force in Africa.

NIGERIA:

Nigeria could become Africa’s only global superpower. Already, It is Africa’s biggest economy and has a decent record of regional engagement in West Africa. By 2040 it will be the fourth largest country in the world after India, China, and the United States with 320-million people.

SEYCHELLES:

Seychelles is the richest country in Africa with a nominal GSP per capita of over $15,685. The second richest nation – and the only other nation in Africa with a GDP per capita of over $10,000 is Equatorial Guinea.

ETHIOPIA:

Ethiopia, the East African nation with the strongest military firepower and the most advanced would (disputably) be Ethiopia. Their high population contributes to their military power as well (being more than 100 million). However, the strength of Libya’s military comes mainly from its large cache of equipment, despite a relatively small number of active troops.

RWANDA:

Rwanda is arguably the safest country in Africa, which is immediately apparent upon arrival in the relaxed and sophisticated capital Kigali. Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, is often lauded as “Africa’s cleanest city”.

BOTSWANA:

Botswana is considered to be one of the safest places in Africa to visit. The most tourist activity is generally around Maun and Kasane which are gateways to major big game parks such as Chobe, Moremi, Okavango Delta, Central Kalahari, and Nxai Pan.

In the Americas, the United States is the primary power.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, the major powers are Brazil and Mexico.

In Europe, we have Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.

In East Asia, we have China and Japan.

In the Indian subcontinent, India is the only power.

In West Asia, we have Israel and Saudi Arabia.

When we hear the word “Superpower,” what generally comes to our mind is the United States and the Former Soviet Union. Remember during the cold war. These two superpowers were locked in a state of geopolitical tension after World War II.

None of the three countries have a holistic economic, diplomatic, and active military influence throughout the continent. They are more of regional power within the continent; Nigeria — West Africa, Egypt — North Africa, and South Africa — Southern Africa.

Even that Nigeria and South Africa have serious internal problems, and Egypt is punching above its weight internationally with a powerful voice in the Middle East and Africa, Egypt is the Winner.
