Why are highschool students burning down schools? Is it a family values issue? What is the solution?

  • 6

The kind of destruction going on in our schools.
Our kids have been watching us closely. Have we failed as mentors and parents?

I think when the system is broken I.e the home and the school. The leads to chaos and miscommunication. Most school children come from good homes, but unfortunatel schools have equally contributed towards creating toxic children in the society.

This reminds me of Social Action Theory. People act differently on different Situations. To begin with, When some makes a mistake, do we blame the individual or do we blame the Society? The individuals when put together, make up a Society on the other hand, the behavior in a Society may shape how an individual grows up.

Back to the Question. The Rampant arson cases is simply a depiction of what the Children learn from the society. When the students are at home and especially in the Electioneering period, they learn that Violence is the way to sort out their problems. We have seen The society rioting, burning down businesses and even Hurling stones at the police, do you think this group didn’t include the curios students who were on holidays?

When the society’s justice system teaches the student that their is actually no one who will sort out their issues unless they are approached violently, that’s exactly what they do. Students may have issues with a teacher or individual students in school but instead of speaking out, they act on their own and it turns out to be violent, hence arson.

We can’t blame the parent at all for poor parenting because some students actually spend most of the time with teachers than their parents. Also I would advise a more human to human interaction with the students to make it easier for them to speak up. Caning is the Violence we should put aside. Punishment is okay but if we keep Caning these students, aren’t we telling them that Violence is okay to some extent? That’s exactly the way they dispense their “justice” to the dormitories. They believe they are hurting the teachers and forgetting it is the parents that will pay for the damages.

I believe We should try Speaking to the students. Some may be mentally disturb and depressed and they just explode in violence. The Exam fever builds a lot of these anxiety too.

Poor parenting…plus relaxed rules and regulations by schools lead to the burning of schools. I remember when I was in high school we used to be caned so badly that when you would hear of the slightest rumor of a student unrest you’d distance yourself from it ASAP to avoid the punishment that came with being identified as part of the group involved in organising the unrest.

Does this still justify the actions of arson by students?

to me I see the teacher hands tied by the government and the so called the human rights activists, not that they are doing bad but they have gone to the extreme. how do you explain A TEACHER BEING ARRESTED FOR ONLY SLAPPING A CHILD. When you infringe and molest a teacher before learners what do you expect in the end if not what is happening?

I believe the answer to be conversation among the students, parents and teachers. Another solution could be homeschool.

Social decadence on the part of the students… We can forthrightly picture our future families.Too bad its not discriminative on the gender. If girls have the audacity to torch down a school then the human morality is thrown to the dogs.it has nothing to do with the education system

How would you explain the yearly repetition of this almost at the same time in different parts of the country? These are the same students who end up breaking into shops during university strikes. Is there a sustainable solution for this?

I saw an answer to a similar question posted earlier. Here’s a copy:

“Our education system is defective. I would look back at it as one of the root causes of the frustration that leads to the (now annual) school fires.

Teaching methods and contents have not been tailored to meet the needs of current socioeconomic realities. Schools have a universal design just like conveyor belts in a factory, regardless of varying individual needs.

Mistrust and a sense of hopelessness is born. Students are pushed to perform for grades rather than an intrinsic curiosity and need for knowledge.”

This is just one of the superficial revelations… There’s much more destruction that is happening in the background. In the students’ minds, in their lives, their mental health, their identity and more… something definitely needs to be done.
