Depo (DMPA-depot medroxyprogesterone), is a widely used injectable contraceptive that is currently the most widely used in Kenya if not sub-sahara as a whole. This is driven by the “convinience” of 3 or 6 months interval between shots. The push has also been propagated by several organisations that fund contraceptives including UKAID, USAID and The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation among other stakeholders. The profits generated by this specific aid programs has been the subject of investigation of Washington activist groups and its a fact Big Pharma benefits from increased uptake of their products. Depo has also been used to systematically reduce the fertility of black jews in Israel by the govt without their knowledge “allegedly”.

DMPA is a steroid based drug as the original endogenous progesterone it is based after but the “depot” stands for its increased fat solubility. This may increase sequestaration into fat cells and delay return to fertility. All prescribed steroids are tapered up and down (slowly increase dose and reduce when discontinuing) when prescribing but with high dose 150mg and 300mg injections of Depo this does not exist. the risk of high dose glucocorticoids (steroid cousins of the sex hormones), on causing diabetes and other metabolic conditions has been studied and highlighted. could the high dose sex streroid hormone injections present a shock to the system impairing fertility much like the glucocorticoids on the sugar control system they regulate? Return to fertility has been an issue for many women after prolonged use, which most experts cap safe prolonged use at 2 yrs of use. the metabolic effects of DEPO has been seen in the 2004 FDA black box warning of possible irreversible osteoporosis (weakening bones) caused by the drug.
with china the rising giant showing that a dwindling population can be an Achilles heel to a giant much like its dwindling cousin Japan has declined with its aging workforce can the Africa rising narrative allow and afford a blatant attack on our population rise which will fuel our economic rise?
